School Supply List

Yes, my older two children brought home their school supply lists for the fall, (already!) My immediate feeling was, "No! I'm not ready for 1st grade and 3rd grade!" My stomach started to churn and an anxious feeling overwhelmed me for a moment. My personality type LOVES lists and getting things organized, but a more tender (and rare) side felt so sad to know that my babies are doing something so normal (growing!) and I can't do a thing to stop it!!
Now that the initial panicky feeling has subsided, I do look forward to taking each of my children for some special one-on-one time to shop for school supplies (in August!) and I am so grateful that they are developing and growing healthily.
For the new moms out there, you probably get tired of hearing it, but these little ones grow so quickly! I admit, with my first child, I had no idea what was to come. Some phases seemed to last forever and I did not have the experience/perspective to know that it was just a season, and that it would end, and something new would begin. I'm sure I am spoiling my 2 1/2 year old, but I am just basking in his innocence...I LOVE to watch him play and explore. I am often brought to tears, not because I am tired of the mundane and longing for the next phase (as I sometimes did with my first), but because I know this will end so quickly!

  1. I am awaiting the letters with my kids final report card to see what teacher God has appointed for them the next year. Then I sit and write a long letter to that teacher and mail it. I write a letter introducing our family to the teacher and explaining our faith, beliefs and willingness to help in any way we can. I like to let the teacher know we are "involved" parents and that we would like to work with the teacher to make the year successful for all involved.
I also love taking the kids shopping and like when the list comes early so if I see something on sale I can snag it then and not have to wait for the list. I make a copy of the list and keep it in my purse in case we are out and see things on sale, I can whip it out and be ready to shop! The kids love school shopping even if the year has just ended, nothing like getting "new" things!!!! Good luck.

  2. Wow Liz - that's great your kids find our next year's teachers so early...we get a letter the 3rd week of August!
Yes, we send in a letter at the beginning of the year with similar content/purpose...very well-received thus far.
And I am cracking up because I carry a copy of the school supply list with me all summer too! :)

  3. you gals are way too organized for me, and i consider myself organized! LOL
we don't get our teacher assignments OR our lists until August! ugh! i wish we got them early!
however, i DO stock up on the basics, i.e., pencils, glue, glue sticks, pencil cases, and folders! my boys go through soooo many folders! they rip so easily!
and K, i really "get" that thing with the oldest and youngest. I too missed out on much with Nick because i thought those cute phases would last forever! now i have a few regrets.
I try not to "baby" Jake, but i do like to take those moments and savor his quirkiness or his "doings" about the house. i never did that with Nick. i think i am also taking more pictures of Jake than of the other two these days.
i know i will miss Jake immensely when he heads off to kindegarten this fall.

  4. I get teary thnking about not having my baby forever, and he is our first!! My sis(5 kids) gave me fare warning never to wish away any of the days or phases, though we all have those moments too!! I always marvel at how when i was teaching(1st grade), i truly did see each child as so precious and felt so honored to be able to be a part of their lives, but now that i have my own child, the thought of how precious each child is to their family is almost overwhelming.
