Full Heart

What else can I say? My heart is full! I have not taken the time to write down all that's been happening because I am enjoying being in the moment with my family, preparing for Christmas, seeing the excitement and wonder in my children's little eyes. What am I loving? The scent of candles - Home for the Holidays, Holiday Bayberry, Christmas Tree. The music - Handel's Messiah, Sara Groves, Enya, Tim Janis, Jim Brickman, Twila Paris, Canadian Brass, A Winter's Solstice, and the list goes on. The sounds - my children laughing and singing, telling and retelling the story of Jesus' birth...I'm really going to try to get at least an audio recording of them describing the angels telling the shepherds "Do not be afraid!" and assuring Mary "You are going to have a son and His name will be called Jesus!!!!!" Just today, KBH exclaimed, "Follow the star and see the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!!!" Oh how my heart melts that they know the Truth at such an early age!
What else do I love? I love when we open a door on our advent calendar after dinner each night, as NCH reads the scripture reference inside, and then looks up the verse in the Bible to read to us...I am so thankful he can read and that he knows where to find each verse in the Bible!! I love that when we pray before dinner, my three-year-old will thank God for not only the food on the table, but for special people in his life, and for others who are sick or hurting. I love when my children are excited for one another. I love when they encourage one another. I love that they are THRILLED to see their Daddy every night!
I love my church - the pastors, the worship, the people. We have been in Galatians and I am being stretched and challenged in wonderful ways. Today, we watched the Star of Bethlehem film during Sunday School hour, and then Pastor Matt preached on Galatians 4:1-7. Is Christmas about stress and Santa and presents for you? I encourage you to visit the church web site www.temple-baptist.org and give a listen to today's message...Christmas is so much more! Are you someone who has been a Christian your whole life but you have trouble "obeying" all of the rules and laws? Be free...listen to the Galatians series and know that the law is not to make us holy, but to show us how unrighteous we are and how much we need God!
Ok, enough preaching...but my heart is so very full right now, I just had to share.

Thanksgiving 2010

This year, it was my side of the family's turn to be scattered...my parents went to my mom's parents' in CT, one sister went to her hubby's parents' in DE, and my other sister went to her hubby's parents' south of Albany. We stayed at our home and my mother and father-in-law arrived on Wednesday late afternoon. I ran my first Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning...over 6400 runners participated and it was cold, crowded and fun! I was very thankful to my father-in-law for driving me so I didn't have to worry about parking in downtown Troy!!
After warming up via hot shower and hot coffee, it was time to get down to business: cooking! Although I really missed my side of the family (and all of our traditions), I was thrilled to be with my children, my husband and his parents. Nothing makes you feel more grown up than making the Thanksgiving feast! (And cleaning up afterwards!!) I was glad my mother-in-law (MIL) was here to share the load. :)
Here's what we ate:
* turkey (a small bird this year, only about 13 lbs; hubby used my parents' fryer pot and cooked the turkey just perfectly!)
* mashed potatoes (I learned from my MIL to heat the milk before adding it - keeps the potatoes fluffy - great tip!)
* homemade gravy (my MIL made this with lots of veggies - delish!)
* corn
* olives/raw veggies dish
* cranberry (jelly, canned)
* cranberry/orange made by my MIL - yum!!
* roasted sweet potatoes & mushrooms with thyme & parsley
* garlic-roasted green beans with shallots & almonds
* butternut squash
* stuffing (my MIL is famous for this and she had to make a fresh batch this morning since we finished every scrap of it yesterday!)
And for dessert -
* pumpkin gingersnap parfaits (my contribution)
* pecan pie (we actually got to dig into this on Wednesday night...my MIL used a great recipe!!)
* blueberry cheesecake (hubby made this in our bread maker)
And just like that, the meal was over and it was time to do the sinkful of dishes! Hubby and FIL took the Herd on a walk, so my MIL and I could clean in peace...quite some time later, everything was back in its place. I even took down all of the Thanksgiving decorations last night, ready to decorate for Christmas today and tomorrow. Dear hubby doesn't know it yet, but I'll be hauling out all of the outdoor decorations later...why not spend tomorrow doing the outdoor decorating as a family?

Such A Sap!

I'm normally the tough one, the one who keeps order, with the stiff upper lip. At funerals, I "stay strong" for everyone else and then cry in my pillow at night. But the older I get, the sappier I'm getting!!
Today, I went to CAH's First Grade Fall Festival at school. I arrived in time to participate in Morning Program, a half-hour of singing and sharing for 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. They usually sing 2 songs, then they stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and sing a patriotic song. One time, they sang Bette Midler's "From A Distance" and I got all weepy. Today, they sang Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" and the combination of that song, their little voices and the way they did sign language as they sang, made me melt!
When I watch my children learn a new skill, I get teary. When my children are excited for one another, I get teary. When I hear my children say Bible verses, I get teary. When my children sing, especially praise and worship songs (like NJH singing, "Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your name"), I get very teary. Two weeks ago, my hubby and CAH were baptized at church and boy did I get teary!!
Thanksgiving Day is tomorrow and I have so very much to be thankful for. I won't list every blessing here right now - for one, my in-laws are about to arrive, and two, I'd be a blubbering mess!
More than anything, I am thankful for my salvation and for my family...

Loving Life!

I know, I haven't added the pictures to my last blog update, but that will have to wait...I've been thinking of all of these wonderful things to share and before I forget them, here they are:
I have been loving life lately. Our trip to Florida was wonderful, and now we're getting back into our day to day routine. It has been a pleasure helping NCH and CAH catch on on school work. Really, I loved it! Their little minds are open and growing leaps and bounds...it's fun to watch them learn. This week was conference week. We enjoyed meeting with the 1st and 3rd grade teachers for CAH and NCH...boys and girls sure are different, aren't they??! Wow! We're so proud of the children...may they always love to learn!
Since NCH and CAH were off from school for the conference days on Thursday and Friday, we decided to enjoy "movie afternoon" on Friday while the younger two kiddos napped. We chose to watch "A Bear Named Winnie" and what a terrific movie it was!! It was the true story behind a real bear, named Winnie, who inspired A. A. Milne to write the Winnie the Pooh stories. We snuggled together on the couch, laughing and even crying a little. Another memory to treasure!
Funny stuff - NJH has been cracking us all up! We watched Monster's, Inc. last week and he's been walking around talking like the gravelly-voiced Roz, "I'm watching you, Wazowski. Always watching." Then, while munching on cheerios, he stood up and said the entire Pledge of Allegiance. He's also been taking my face with both of his hands and smooching me, head turned, eyes wide open...so adorable!
We've been listening to Christmas music in the van lately...although I have a few songs I am already sick of (Feliz Navidad, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and Simply Having A Wonderful Christmastime, are getting annoying), there are a couple that make me cry: "Mary, Did You Know?", "Breath of Heaven" and "Feed the World" get me every time! I love listening to my children sing along with the radio. We were all singing, "Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!" the other day when I asked the Herd, "Who is the King of Israel?" CAH answered, "Pharaoh" and NCH guessed, "God." When I explained that Noel meant Christmas, they realized the song was about Jesus' birth and that He is the King of Israel. This led to a wonderful discussion about people all over the world singing the song "The First Noel" and wondering who knew what the song was really all about. This tied in so nicely with our project of packing Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes...NCH and CAH put a lot of effort into packing the box for their special child and even prayed over the boxes this year. I love carrying out traditions with my children!
Today I took the girls to the annual Claverack Reformed Church Bazaar. We try to get there every year...it's held at the church I attended as a young girl. I love going back to my old town, driving by my old house, seeing old friends. This year, I was hoping to see my aunt/uncle/cousin and grandparents. The girls and I started in the Yule Booth area, as we always do. We visited with the dearest of old friends and found a few ornaments we had to have. Next, the girls were eager to decorate (and EAT) their gingerbread girls. After that, we hurried upstairs, eager to see our family from Connecticut...but they were no where to be found! We had missed them! I quickly called my uncle and thankfully we were able to meet up in the parking lot of the orchard stand just down the street from my old house. It was wonderful to visit for a little bit, and then I tried calling my grandparents...sadly, no answer. I'd missed them too! The girls and I headed over to our traditional pizza lunch spot, LaBella's Pizzeria...and there was my grandparents' car!!! They were there!! What a treat it was to have lunch with them!!
I have so much more to say, but it will have to wait for another day. I am so thankful for my family...for the little moments, the memories and the traditions.

The Herd Goes to Disney

Oh, this blog update has been buzzing around my busy brain for days now!

It all started last Friday morning, 11/5. Hubby and I got up around 5am and got ourselves ready for the big journey. We waited until the last possible second to wake the kiddos and help them dress...we had to meet my parents at the airport around 6:15am. All went without a hitch...our gazillion suitcases (as well as car seat and booster) were checked, we all passed through security and made our way to our gate. That's when we realized our flight was not technically "delayed" but not exactly "on time" either. We eventually made our way onto the plane, having paired off: NCH with my dad, NJH with hubby, CAH with my mom, and KBH with me. We were all extremely excited!! We made our connection in Baltimore with not much time to spare...landed in Orlando without any problems. Waiting in line for the rental cars took a little time, but fruit snacks and granola bars helped pass the time!
As we drove into the resort front parking lot, we were all amazed at what we saw…beautiful palm trees, fountains, an enormous pool…helpful greeters and security personnel…we had the children change into bathing suits and they enjoyed splashing about in the pool and hot tubs. The air temp was mid-60ish but didn’t scare the kids off from waterplay!
Our rooms at the Hilton Resort were absolutely beautiful! Mom and I realized we needed to stock up on groceries, so we left the guys to supervise The Herd at the playground. I will admit that grocery shopping at 5:30pm, after getting up at 5am and flying across the country, was exhausting! But it was well worth it…we enjoyed breakfast at “home” each morning, packed our own lunches most days, and ate dinner at “home” all but two nights (one of which we packed a taco salad to eat at Magic Kingdom while waiting for the parade.) We enjoyed a dinner of chicken, stuffing, and veggies and then hurried the kiddos into bed as they dreamed of Magic Kingdom! The adults sat and visited, and mom and I spent most of the late evening planning our route for the next day. Thanks to many suggestions and tips from many friends, we knew a general “plan” for Day One at Disney.

Saturday morning, we awoke, feeling full of excitement! We headed off to Magic Kingdom with our cooler of bottled water and snacks. As we entered the parking lot, we realized it would be a process to actually enter the park: park your car (remember lot name and row number), take the tram (this was challenging the first time – other visitors appeared more confident and shoved their way onto the first tram…we waited for the next one, watching in awe!) After the tram ride, we got into the Monorail line…it moved more quickly than we thought it would, and in no time, we hopped aboard. Next we had our bags checked by security, then scanned our cards at the gate and each of us entered through the turnstiles. We were in! We loaded the double stroller back up and started walking towards the park like moths fluttering to light…within a few moments of entering the park, a street party started – with floats and people on stilts and dancers and characters and all! Can you say overstimulation? Crowds of people, music…auditory and visual stimulation everywhere we turned! (But it was wonderful!) I loved watching my children take it all in…their eyes wide and jaws open!
We made our way up to Fantasy Land and got in the 20-minute wait line for Dumbo. We were told it doesn’t matter the time of day – that line is always long, for some strange reason. The kids were thrilled to get on the ride and we could see all of Fantasy Land below us and we rode around and around. Next stop, Mickey’s Philharmagic, a 3D movie show, which was fantastic!! Next we were off to It’s A Small World, my favorite ride from childhood. It was even better than I remembered it! All the kids (and adults) were in awe…mouths open as we took it all in, like a dream come true. We rode the famous carousel next…those horses were REALLY high up there! (Yes, I rode one too!) I was a little nervous getting on the Peter Pan ride, not sure how scary Captain Hook would be for the little ones, but they ALL LOVED it!! We discovered the Tea Cup ride was closed for renovations, as was the Pooh ride, but the kids didn’t miss what they didn’t know about. Next we were off to something truly special – a delicious buffet luncheon at The Crystal Palace, with Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and Pooh Bear!!! (My children are huge Pooh fans, especially NCH! Being 8 ½ didn’t stop him from giving his pal Pooh a big hug!) The food was beyond amazing, and the children were invited to join the characters in a parade around the eating area as we clapped and took pictures. After lunch, we took a ride on the Liberty Bell Riverboat , visited the Swiss Family Tree House and took a ride on the Jungle Cruise. We ended the day with a show at the Enchanted Tiki Room. Yes, we were tired, but remember: when you leave the park, you have to take the Monorail back to the tram, then take the tram to your car and see if you remember where you parked! (Day One, we were in the Daisy Lot.) When we got back to our “home,” hubby and I bathed the Herd while my mom and dad got spaghetti and salad ready for dinner. We were all good and tired, so after planning our next day, we headed to bed.

Sunday morning – we were off for Day 2 at Magic Kingdom! With a little more confidence, we hopped aboard the tram (after parking in Dopey lot) and then…dun-dun-dun – Monorail not working! We turned to get in line for the ferry…and there was a LONG line…I think we had to wait for 3 ferries and finally it was our turn…in a way, we were glad the Monorail was down so we could try the ferry, which was a fun way to get to the park. This time, we headed straight to Tomorrow Land! We were so glad for the friends that educated us about “Fast Passes.” This helped us breeze through several rides and made for happier visitors. Our first ride of the day was “Astro Orbiter” – much like Dumbo, only space ships, way up high on top of a building. Hubby and I were both surprisingly nauseous on this ride, but no one else seemed bothered. We were able to participate in nearly all Tomorrow Land had to offer: Buzz Lightyear ride, Monsters, Inc. show, Space Mountain (CAH, NCH, hubby and I did this one…I opted NOT to go on it again! The others went on the People Mover while we did Space Mountain), Carousel of Progress (we all LOVED this one!! NJH was precious singing along and waving to Rover the dog!), and NJH’s favorite Indy Speedway. We had packed our lunch and we enjoyed it while sitting on a sunny bench in Tomorrow Land. Later, we headed over to Frontier Land just in time for the 3pm parade! NJH and CAH seemed to enjoy the parade the most, waving to Princesses and characters. Afterwards, we headed to Splash Mountain (all but Dad and NJH), and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Mom and Dad took NJH to Tom Sawyer Island…he had a ball!) By then, I was totally pooped, so I actually took a 10-minute sitting-in-the- stroller break while hubby took the older three on a walk. We dragged ourselves back to the Monorail, tram and car, arriving “home” to experiment with a new recipe: needed to use up the left over spaghetti noodles and chicken, so we made our own version of chicken tetrazzini…and it was delish! Next thing we knew, it was bed time for the kids and planning out Epcot for the adults (ok, so Blue Moon for the guys and wine and planning for the ladies!)

Monday – we were on our way to Epcot! I have to admit, I wasn’t very enthusiastic about Epcot. Many friends had told me this was “the park to skip” so I was tentative…but within just moments of entering the park, I was astounded at its beauty, its cleanliness and…lack of terrible lines! There was plenty of room to maneuver the double stroller, and so we were off! Hubby and NCH nabbed us fast passes for Soarin’ (a reported very popular ride) and we all headed to Spaceship Earth (an incredible ride!!), Living with the Land (another fascinating and educational ride…the greenhouses blew me away!!!), and The Circle of Life film (I was afraid this would be an extreme tree-hugger propaganda piece but it was terrific!) We enjoyed the lunch we had packed, again in the beautiful sunshine, and then all but dad and NJH were treated to the amazement of the Soarin’ ride. Later, we made our way to “Norway” for the Maelstrom ride (this was so-so, not quite as exciting as had been “advertised”), but we loved stopping at the Norwegian shop on the way back! (An enormous troll, Viking hats, and beautiful sweaters galore!) Next, NCH and hubby were off to Mission: Space (I read many warnings about this ride, so I opted to do the “lite” version later with my mom and CAH…we loved this tamer version!) Hubby felt so ill after the Mission: Space ride that he decided not to go on the Test Track with KBH, CAH, NCH, my mom and me. We LOVED it! Then it was time to scoot across the park to The Seas area, to enjoy a spectacular dinner at the Coral Reef restaurant. The restaurant had a wall of windows that looked into the aquarium tank next door. We watched a giant sea turtle paddle around, several sharks dart about and sting rays floating by. Dinner was DELICIOUS and our waiter was a riot, telling all kinds of cute jokes and sharing interesting facts about ocean life. The kids got to build their own sundaes for dessert…it was especially cute seeing my dad and NJH share ice cream. After dinner, we headed next door to watch the Turtle Talk show with Crush, the turtle. CAH and NJH went right up front and even asked/answered questions during the show! Next, we rode the most soothing ride on clam-mobiles, the Nemo ride…no one wanted to get off! But we were glad we did when we saw the next room – the aquarium! A 6 million gallon tank with over 60 species of sea life…what fun it was to see dolphins swim right in front of our faces! NJH and CAH were in AWE! Although we didn’t want to leave, it was time for us to use the rest of our fast passes: Mission Space: Lite and Test Track (again!) NJH played in the climbing area at the base of Mission Space and I had to pry him away so we could get to the Illuminations Showcase in time to gaze upon the spectacular fireworks show! I had chills watching the display…it was truly beautiful. I kept thinking: this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my family, yet this happens at Epcot closing EVERY NIGHT! After the show, all the park employees waved, wearing a Mickey Mouse glove…such a sweet touch at the end of a lovely day! We headed back to our cars in the Journey lot and headed “home” for bed. (Note: there was A LOT more to Epcot…all the “countries” to visit…we only made it as far as Norway, but with older children/adults, the rest of Epcot looked amazing too!!)

Tuesday – ahhhhh! A day of rest! We planned a stay-at-the-resort and swim day…and it was 80 degrees and sunny! The only bump in our day – NJH complained of an earache and actually asked us to take him to the doctor! In no time, hubby and NJH were back from the Minute Clinic at CVS with amoxicillin in hand. Thankfully, the doctor said NJH could swim with the rest of the kiddos, so we spent the day going from pool to fountain to huge chess game to hot tub to pool and back. We cooked hotdogs on the grill for lunch and burgers for dinner. The kids enjoyed the “Dive In” movie (Diary of Wimpy Kid), the resort showed in the pool area. Then it was time for bed and more planning for the final Magic Kingdom day.

Wednesday
- We decided to make it a later start, since we knew we’d be watching the nighttime parade and fireworks show at Magic Kingdom, so hubby made us all a huge breakfast while my mom packed up lunch AND dinner for the herd. We arrived back at Magic Kingdom with all kinds of bags and coolers…too many to fit in the double stroller! We took lots of pictures as we entered the park, and then we were off to enjoy our last time on our favorite rides: Small World, Peter Pan, Mickey’s Philharmagic…and some new ones: Pirates, Aladdin, Country Bears, hubby and NCH went to Hall of Presidents, everyone but NJH and I went on Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain again. NJH talked me into one more time on the Indy Speedway (um…when the ride was over, I got off and turned to help him, but he was too busy STEPPING ON THE GAS! I grabbed for him and pulled him OUT of the car, crazy little 3-year-old!!) Then we enjoyed a leisurely trip on the WDW Railroad all around the park. Next, my mom, hubby, NCH and CAH had to have one more turn on Space Mountain and then we were off to grab a piece of sidewalk to eat dinner and hold our place to watch the parade. Thank goodness we sat down when we did! Main Street was FILLED with people 45 minutes before the parade even began! It was cumbersome putting together the taco salad and doling it out to our party of 8, but it tasted great and it helped pass the time. Before we knew it, the SpectroMagic Parade had begun! Talk about visual and auditory overstimulation – “this dazzling event featured some 600,000 miniature bulbs lit up in wild, changing patterns, moving in concert with sound effects and a dramatic musical score” according to borrowed my Birnbaum Guide Book. It was amazing! And just about 25 minutes later (after enjoying a trail mix snack and meeting some tourists from Japan), we were treated to the fabulous “Wishes” fireworks show, which lit up the sky just above the famous castle. Poor KBH was on overload and had to close her eyes , while striking her famous finger-sucking pose! When the show was over, we joined the slow-moving throng of people to the gates, to the Monorail, to the tram, to the Minnie lot, to our cars…at “home” at last. We exhaustedly planned our next day and flopped into bed.

Thursday – our last day at Disney! Another gorgeous day…sunshine, no humidity, mid 70s…and we were off to Animal Kingdom, parking in the Dinosaur lot, taking the tram to the gates and making our way in. This was a busy park – lots of people (we realized that many people had the day off due to Veteran’s Day)…but we headed right for the Lion King show and it was beyond amazing! I was in total AWE! Of course when they asked some children to come up and join the show during “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” CAH popped right up and joined in the merriment! We were all quite impressed with the singing, dancing, stilt-walking (and JUMPING) and acrobatics during the show. Next we were off on the Wildlife Express to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. There were all kinds of fun things for kids to do…mine especially liked the Affection Section (petting and brushing goats) and a live show with a hawk and a tortoise. (Yep, you guessed it, CAH volunteered to go on stage and help…does she have a future in show business?!) Next we were off on the Kilimanjaro Safari, a fabulous (bouncy) ride with a view of all kinds of animals – zebras, hippos, giraffes, elephants, warthogs, lions, etc. We all loved this one! Our next stop was “Asia” where all but NJH and I enjoyed the Kali River Rapids (WET!) ride, then took in the Flights of Wonder AMAZING bird show (way beyond my expectations!!!) and then hubby, mom, NCH and CAH bravely set out for Expedition Everest (a crazy rollercoaster!) Our final stop was DinoLand…the kids loved playing in the Boneyard and NCH, CAH and hubby talked me into trying the Dinosaur ride – YES, I SCREAMED! It was super scary!! On our way out of the park, we noticed “Finding Nemo: the musical” was about to start…poor hubby, KBH and NJH didn’t make it in time, but the rest of us really enjoyed this unique performance. Sadly, the park was closing and it was time to head “home.” Although we had entertained the idea of going out to eat, we were all too weary and decided to just bathe the kids and enjoy a homemade dinner of chicken Caesar salad. We also got to play “finish it up night” since we couldn’t leave all the food behind (it was hard to tell who enjoyed finishing the ice cream more – my dad or the kids!) Next we got some laundry done and got busy packing…then it was “finish the wine and the Blue Moon” time…and off to bed.

Friday – We were all sad to say goodbye to our beautiful resort, the fancy palm trees, and the gorgeous weather, but off we went to return the rental cars, check our bags and print our boarding passes. Before we knew it, we were flying home!

Okay, so this was WAY longer than I had planned…so what’s my summary? It was a wonderful trip!! I am so thankful to my parents for taking us. This is something we may never have been able to do on our own! What terrific memories we will have with us!

Great stuff: time together, lovely resort, entire Disney experience!

Best rides/shows: Magic Kingdom - Small World, Carousel of Progress, Peter Pan; Epcot – Test Track, Soarin’, Spaceship Earth…ok, so everything at this park was amazing!; Animal Kingdom – Lion King show, Flights of Wonder show

Tips:
-get reservations for any meals ahead (my mom arranged our two special meals long before our trip)
- use fast passes as much as possible
- know what you’re doing BEFORE you get to the park (we planned each day the night before and that worked really well)
- remember it takes awhile to get IN and OUT of the parks, especially Magic Kingdom
- packing our own food saved not only money, but time!
- factor in a day (or more) of rest
- this is not a “relaxing” or “restful” vacation, but it is a ton of fun!

Family Fun Night

Last night was such a nice evening...we ate a delicious "comfort food" dinner of oven stroganoff over egg noodles with green beans and applesauce. The older two kids quickly did their homework and practiced piano. They gave themselves baths while I went for a run (don't worry - hubby was home and supervised the herd!) When I returned from my run, the older two were playing "Battleship." NCH was working on columns and rows in social studies (using a grids on maps), so Battleship was a really fun way for him to practice (a.k.a. "show off") what he had learned! A new movie had arrived in the mail from Netflix, so we all gathered to watch "Tinkerbell." The movie was cute and we were all warm and snuggly watching it together. It was just a very lovely evening!

The Baby Says...

Ok, so he's really not a baby anymore, he's three! (But NJH will ALWAYS be my baby.) So the kids just finished lunch and I went over to NJH to wipe his hands and face with a washcloth...he squealed and then frowned and stated, "Ah, that was NOT cool!!!" Hilarious!!! Of course I laughed, to which he replied, "And it's not funny either!"

Soundtrack of Life

I've always intended to write a blog update about music and what my "life soundtrack" would be. For now, I'll just do quick updates here and there, listing the current CD playing in the van, as well as songs that are speaking to me at that moment.

Whenever I hear, "It's Raining Like Magic," I think of driving my now 6-year-old daughter to preschool. She was (and still is) such a joyful, smiling child. I can picture her beautiful smile and hear her voice saying, "I love you, Mama" every time I hear that song!

This week, we've had the Raffi "Singable Songs for the Very Young" CD playing in the van. Here are the kiddos' faves:
Robin in the Rain
Aikendrum
There's a Spider on the Floor
Five Green and Speckled Frogs
And the one that always makes me teary - "I Wonder If I'm Growing"

I still sing to my youngest, now age 3, before tucking him into bed at night. We sing a variety of songs, but last night, we sang "Silent Night." My heart was so touched by his little voice sweetly singing, "Sleep in heavenly peace" and I consciously told myself, "Brain, press record! Never forget this beautiful little voice!"

Non-kid music that is speaking to me:
"Before the Morning" by Josh Wilson
"Our Hope Endures" by Natalie Grant
It's funny, both songs are about holding on, not giving up, leaning on the Lord and putting our faith and hope in Him. I feel like life is wonderful right now, and when I hear those types of songs, I admit to fearing the day when I will really need those songs to lift me and encourage me. I dread the pain or sadness that may be looming, but I am truly thankful for this time of peace in my life.

Growing Up

Here's the story of NCH ("Big N") -

Newborn: mama couldn't put him down.

Age one: he screamed through MOPS, but stopped crying as soon as mama held him.

Age two: the nursery workers at church had to come get us, he cried so much!

Age three: he cried when I dropped him off to preschool two mornings a week.

Age four: he cried at VBS when I wasn't the first mom there at pickup time.

Age five: tentatively started kindergarten.

Age six: eagerly invited us to see his Morning Program at school.

Age seven: he was "ok" with us being at school events.

Age eight: this morning, I went to see his Morning Program...when I went to say hello to him afterwards, he turned beet red and turned around, rolling his eyes as he walked away with his friends!!!

Now it's mama's turn to cry! :(

As Good As It Gets

Today was really a near-perfect day. I try not to use the word "perfect" as I have a few hangups about perfection...but anyway, today -
- hubby got up with the kids, gave them breakfast and got them all ready for church (I had taken allergy medicine and Nyquil and didn't even stir until 9:30am!) I hustled myself to get dressed and out the door for church in five minutes, and we made it!
- all four children went off to Sunday School without a tear (hooray!)
- it was baby dedication Sunday (so wonderful to see so many little ones and their parents) and a friend's two older boys were baptized
- we sang a song I need to hear over and over:
"All is well with my soul,
He is God in control,
I know not all His plans,
but I know I'm in His hands"

- after church, we had fun playing with hubby's phone/internet radio and found a Veggie Tales/kids station (we loved hearing Larry's I Love My Lips song and then we heard a cool mash-up of "Over the Rainbow" and "I'm Yours")
- we took a fun family "hike" (more like a stroll) along the Vischer Ferry trail not far from our house. The kids were ecstatic when we told them we were doing a family hike!! We didn't go for too long (the plentiful rains had made part of the trail impassable), but we saw several kinds of flowers, beautiful leaves, a couple of frogs and even some snakes (yikes!) We do hope to make hiking a regular family activity, as the cost is minimal, it's great exercise and it gets us off the couch/away from hand-held electronics, and bonds us as a family.
- after our walk, the older two BEGGED us "Please can we rake the yard?!!" Hubby and I looked at one another, puzzled, until we realized they wanted to make a big pile of leaves to jump in - "SURE!" we answered.
- a little later, I took the older two to get some groceries. My 8 1/2 year old has become super-helpful in the store, knowing what we need, where to find things, how to figure out best-buys, how to place items in the cart and on the checkout counter, how to bag and returning the cart.
- I was really excited about dinner: hubby had put the crock pot on a timer for me, so our pot roast has started cooking around 4 in the morning...by 6pm, we had a fabulously tender roast, and I had made party potatoes, steamed carrots and applesauce to round out the meal. I had wanted to have an apple pie ready for dessert, but didn't have time to make it earlier in the day.
- after finishing the dinner dishes, hubby and I worked on making the apple pie while the younger two "cleaned" the basement and the older two practiced the piano.

- then it was bath time and bed time!
Here I sit, reflecting on a wonderful day, thankful for my family, the beautiful weather, our yummy dinner, and post-bath scented kiddos. I also treasure two other moments in the day: my four-year-old praying at dinner ("help us to be healthy in the morning, thank you for the fun family hike, thank you for mommy grocery shopping and thank you for this delicious dinner") and my three-year-old singing "The Little Light of Mine" as I tucked him in bed...
Let it shine til Jesus comes, I'm gonna let it shine!!

First Fall Food

Oh yes, it's that time of year! Apple picking leads to applesauce, apple pie, apple crisp, and our family favorite: APPLE CRUNCH!!

Apple Crunch (supposedly serves 9-12; our family of 6 would scarf down the whole thing!)
1 pkg JIFFY Apple Cinnamon Muffin Mix
3 lbs apples peeled and sliced (about 8 cups...I used 8 apples tonight)
1/2 cup white sugar (I use 1/4 to 1/3 cup; very sweet otherwise)
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened (but not melted)
3/4 cup rolled oats

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place apples in 13x9 pan, cover with white sugar and cinnamon (I toss apples with mixture). Combine the rest of the ingredients and sprinkle on top of apple mix in pan. Bake 40-45 minutes.

(Recipe from the side panel of Jiffy Apple Cinnamon Muffin Mix)

Sorry I don't have a picture - the Herd happily chowed down tonight's batch!!

I'm Too Busy Enjoying the Moment!

So many things are happening all at once...I know I should take the time to write down my thoughts and feelings, post pictures, document this chapter in our lives, but...
I'm too busy enjoying the moment!!!!

It's back to school time and I have a third-grader, a first-grader, a M/W/F preschooler and a T/TH preschooler! The older two start piano lessons tomorrow. All four start AWANA on Friday. Life is very busy, but I am so happy I am here to not only be part of it all, but to watch their little faces...to feel their excitement!!

We had an amazing family vacation at my parents' lake house right before school started. We spent a week on the lake, doing all kinds of fun things: swimming, boating, tubing, fishing, sailing, kayaking, hiking, visiting the Adirondack Animal Land, going out for ice cream, making s'mores, flying kites...yes, it was wonderful! I feel tremendously blessed to have my parents so nearby and so willing to have us stay with them...who offer us a date night...who spoil us by letting us sleep in and feeding us yummy filet mignon!! I even had a mid-afternoon coffee date with my mom (sans kiddos!)

This past Saturday, we met up with 16 other family members for an apple-picking adventure. After greeting one another (this takes awhile, all that hugging and such!), we enjoyed a picnic in the orchard, then some photo ops, picking apples, sharing treats, even singing happy birthday to the 4 Sept/Oct bday kiddos! How special it was to have my grandparents there with us...I love them so very much. Afterwards, we took a peek at the house I lived in for my first 11 years (amazing the way the trees have grown!) and enjoyed the view of the Catskills...then stopped at our old favorite pizza shop for dinner. It was another day of great memories.

I have so much more to say, and pictures to add...but bed calls me.

Anyone who may be reading this, remember to enjoy every moment. Don't worry about the details. Don't fret if everything isn't "just so." Life is going by so quickly...be sure those near and dear to you know they are loved and that God loves them!

Days to Cherish

My little girl turned six last week...she will start first grade in a few weeks. Kindergarten was only half-days last year, so we will be apart for most of the day this year. When I ask her if she is excited about first grade, she tells me, "Yes. Kind of. I don't want a yelling teacher. And I want to have lunch at home with you, Mama." (Yes, I melt!)
Well, she's been enjoying a 4-evening synchronized swimming "try it out" camp this week. It's been a FABULOUS class and she is loving every minute of it. I have enjoyed it as well - watching her smile as she learns a new skill, listening to her sing along with a CD in the van on our way to and from class. While she was singing tonight, I noted the lyrics and decided to write them down and save them. I plan to send them to her when she is in college one day...I hope we will both remember this special time. How I cherish these days!

"The stars are out, the moon is up
It’s time to go to bed
I’m so glad you have a place
To lay your little head

Have a deep and peaceful sleep
Dream away the hours
When you wake, the sun will come
To smile upon the flowers

Go to sleep, my little friend
Beneath the evening star
You will always have a friend
No matter where you are"

Great Day (OH-YEAH!)

Today was full of fun!
Here's how it all went down -
8:57 dropped off CAH at Cheerleading Camp
9:04 dropped off NCH at Town Camp
headed back home to empty dishwasher, vacuum, etc.
10:15 last day of swim lessons for KBH (today was "Fun Friday", during which the kids get to play/go off diving boards, etc.) KBH was all excited to be going off the high dive, but (surprisingly) changed her mind halfway up the ladder...she did the "medium board" instead and then enjoyed her last day with her 3 favorite teachers.

11:00 headed over to CAH's Cheerleading Camp for her Cheer Show
She did a super job smiling, remembering all those cheers, and having a great time! I was so pleased that she enjoyed the camp as much as she did, and then I thought, "Of course she loves it - her 'role' in our family is cheerleader. She is always encouraging others!" During the week, she got to make her own t-shirt and pom-poms. Her coaches said they loved having her there, and that she was a great fit in the cheerleading world (so cute!!)

12:00 headed home for lunch and to get ready for an afternoon of swimming with friends
1:00 several friends arrived with their children in tow...it was a beautiful sunny but not at all humid afternoon, and the four ladies enjoyed chatting as the thirteen children swam and played together. I feel incredibly blessed to have friends who know me - the good, the bad and the ugly - and still love me! The fact that I can just "be me" with these ladies makes me feel so at ease.
4:00 our friends headed home and my older three kiddos disappeared upstairs. I heard NCH organizing a "dance show rehearsal" so NJH and I headed out back. NJH taught himself how to climb on KBH's Dora two-wheeler (with training wheels), and rode it all over the back patio!!
4:45 we piled in the van to take NCH to his friend's birthday party at the town pool.
5:15 came back home and vegged on the couch to The Wiggles until hubby came home, had dinner
6:30 I headed out to pick up NCH
7:30 It was Dance Show Time!!! NCH planned the event. Earlier in the week, he had selected his own music, made a play list and burned his own CD! "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas is evidently his favorite song, as he has about 10 versions of it! Anyway, it was showtime, and hubby, NJH and I gathered to watch. There was singing, air guitar, choreography and gymnastics! Even special bows at the end...great stuff!
Soon afterwards, it was bedtime for the herd.
In the words of my little cheerleader, today was a great day - "Oh Yeah!!"

Summer Camp

I just caught my kiddos having fun...NCH made his own "sign in" sheets, and he had his younger siblings up in his room playing "Summer Camp." He went out to the van and got a CD for sing-along music time. They traced their hands and feet for craft time. I'm not sure what other activities they did, but I heard them giggling away up there...
I love times like this!!!

One of THOSE Days!

Warning: this post will contain whining and complaining, as well as way, way TMI!!!!!
Monday evening, I had a lovely girls-night-out/farewell dinner for a friend. We sipped yummy beverages in a coffee shop until it was closing time. Unfortunately, my decaf hazelnut latte was likely NOT decaf, I discovered at 2am, still WIDE awake!
So when Tuesday morning rolled around and I headed out on my daily taxi route (see below), I was SLIGHTLY tired.
Here's the route:
7:30 - hubby drops older 2 to swim team
8:45 - I bring the younger 2 and pick up the older 2 from swim team
9:00 - drop the older 2 to VBS
Hurried across town (with cooler and ice packs) to Aldi to get groceries.
10:15 - KBH to town pool for swim lesson/entertain NJH
11:00 - drop off form/check to sign CAH up for synchronized swim trial lessons at YMCA,
hurry across town to drop off forms at preschool
12:00 - pick up older 2 from VBS
hurry home to unload groceries, hang towels, rinse and hang suits, make lunch, etc.
1:15 hurry across town to drop NCH off for tennis lesson
It was then that I decided to be a "fun mom" and let the younger 3 play at a nearby park (there wasn't time to go home before we had to pick NCH back up)...I sipped my diet peach Snapple and watched the younger ones play.
Suddenly my phone rang...it was hubby, who had questions about the schedule...along came one of the kids, who had to go potty, so I had her go in the van and use the piddle-pot...I continued my conversation on the phone when I terrible odor wafted my way...the child using the piddle-pot did a lot more than piddle! Oh no!!! I had ONE napkin to clean her with!! As I was assisting her, another one of my children ran over with a call of nature...tears began to well up in my eyes. I told them all to get in the van - "fun mom" at the park was gone! We were off to the library bathroom...with the stenchy piddle-pot wrapped in a plastic bag! When everyone finished potty duty at the library, it was time to get NCH from tennis camp. He gagged when he got in the van (which made me laugh - I know, how mean!!)
By the time we got home, it was 3pm and I was in DESPERATE need of QUIET TIME! I had 3 kids lay down for rests, gave NCH a workbook, poured myself an icy lemonade and sat in my antigravity lounge chair on the deck. Ahhhhhhhhhh! After an hour, I felt MUCH better! The kids got up and played in the pool for hours (even finding a dead frog, CAH named "Allie"...they proceeded to give the dead frog rides on a pool float until I said enough!)
The kids polished off a ton of food for dinner, and then I was off for a meeting with a friend from church (but not before I took a layer of skin off my bottom lip...I will give $10 to anyone who can guess how that happened!! I don't think anyone could ever guess!)

Oh, and one more thing: Midol Complete contains CAFFEINE and a diuretic...so if you take 2 in the morning and drink 2 cups of coffee, you will have a serious caffeine buzz and you will nearly wet your pants!!!!!

Crazy People

We were on our way to musical camp the other morning...
CAH suddenly exclaimed, "Those people must be CRAZY!!!!!!"
She paused and I looked around to see what she was talking about.
She pointed to the school bus traveling near us and continued,
"Sending their children to SCHOOL in the S U M M E R?!!!!!!!!!!"

Baby Birds & Berries

Two kids dropped off to musical camp,
Two kids quietly playing,
It was my moment...
I slowly poured the tantalizing raspberries into the strainer and rinsed them gently.
I placed a berry on my tongue and savored the tangy sweetness...
Bam! A blond little boy bumped into my thigh!
My two-year-old son...
And then another Bump! And there was my four-year-old daughter...
Both children stood there looking up at me,
Mouths wide open,
Like baby birds,
Waiting for me to place raspberries in their mouths,
One by one,
And within a minute,
The raspberries were gone.

Summer Jobs

First, I have to thank a friend of a friend on facebook for sharing the original idea for this! Here is a list of jobs for my 8-year-old to do this summer. We are starting out having him earn video game time, but we will modify soon to include all "screen time." He really enjoys earning something for his efforts, and he NEEDS some structure in his day. He does have swim practice followed by swim lessons each morning, but there will be plenty of "down time" in the afternoon and some evenings.

Summer 2010
NCH’s Earning Video Game time
All rules are subject to change by Mom and Dad!
• Reading = minute for minute* (does not include one hour of reading time every day)
• Vacuum upstairs = 15 minutes
• Clean windows = 15 minutes... (Mom will explain further)
• Laundry (gather, sort, fold, put away) = 10 minutes per load
• Weed (see Dad) = 15 minutes per area
• Unload dishwasher (except glasses) = 10 minutes
• Dusting = 10 minutes per room (must move items)
• vacuum the kitchen=10 minutes
. vacuum basement = 10 minutes
. do dishes = 10 minutes
. book report = 10 minutes
. math practice = 10 minutes
The following chores are not included in earning video game time…
o Feeding fish
o Cleaning your bathroom
o Cleaning (tidying) your bed room
o Setting the table
o Clearing off the table
o tidying the backyard

Time can be lost for disrespect, fighting, not obeying and anything else deemed by Mom or Dad!

Follow up to Fitness Update

I promised I would get back to you upon completion of The 30 Day Shred, and here I am with a final comment or two:
I finished Day 30 last night and I am SO pleased with the results. Remember, I didn't lose weight and I didn't do a food log, nor did I eat according to a certain plan. I simply did the daily workout every day and found great improvement in my endurance and especially in my strength. I HIGHLY recommend this program, especially if you are confined to the home for fitness.
So what's next? I know I mentioned the Jillian Michaels "Making the Cut" book/plan, but I am putting that on hold for now. Why? Because there is a specific meal plan and our family schedule does not lend itself to cooking specific breakfasts, lunches and dinners. (Next Monday, for example, goes like this: 7:30am-9 swim team practice for older two, 9:15-10:15 swim lesson for oldest, 10:15-11 swim lesson for girls, 11 dash home for lunch, 1-5 craft camp for CAH, 3:30/4-8?? swim meet, 7:45-8:15 dance practice for Sweet C!!) Still not sure how it's all going to work, but I will drive myself crazy if I try to follow a very specific meal plan for the next 6 weeks!
Instead, I am going to:
1) repeat the 30 Day Shred, but this time I will do Level One one day, Level Two the next, and Level Three the next and keep rotating all month. I will also increase the weights I will use during Strength Training portions.
2) continue running a 5K through the neighborhood three times a week. It's not too bad in the summer, as I can run at 8:30pm and still see the road! I have two "races" later in the summer, so I want to be sure I can still complete the full course (my pace continues to hover between 9.5 min-10min/mile.)
3) keep a food log - writing down EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth! Usually when I start to keep a food journal, I start out ok, but if/when I eat unhealthy food, I stop logging. This time, I really want to stick with it, no matter what I eat.
4) do a yoga DVD a few times a week. I have noticed that although my strength has improved, my flexibility has actually decreased a bit. I am excited to do a yoga workout now that I am stronger (and hopefully can support myself better in some of the poses!)
So that's the plan. I am still very interested in "Making the Cut" but I will wait until Fall to go gung-ho on that plan.
I'll keep you posted...

Fitness Update

Many friends have been asking me about my latest fitness "kick." If you read my blog, you know I'm into fads and kicks, but I also have a true desire to be fit, in shape, trim, and healthy. Almost a month ago, I borrowed from my local library a DVD called "Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred." For those who may not know, Jillian Michaels is a trainer from the TV show "The Biggest Loser." Her Shred DVD includes three 20-minute workouts. Each workout has strength training, cardio and abs. I was drawn to this program for several reasons - Jillian gets results, the workouts are only 20 minutes long, and there are three levels (you spend the first 10 days on level one, next 10 on level two, and last 10 on level three.) This seemed reasonable to me. Also, I could do this in my own home, with the only required equipment being some hand weights. (I have 2, 3 and 5 pound weights.)
So here I am on Day 25. I won't lie to you - the first few days on each level have been extremely challenging!! Actually, half way into level three is STILL very difficult, but I am SEEING RESULTS. At the beginning, I could do 4 real push-ups. Now I can do over 20! Last night, I did 15 real sit-ups (no feet hooked under the couch.) The weight is not dropping off, but much of my flab is turning to muscle (hooray!!) (Also, I am not paying attention to what I am eating...the kids have swim team practice from 5-6:30pm for the month of June, which is not conducive to healthy family dinner hour!) But I WILL get back on track with eating - first by logging everything I eat, and then by making healthier choices and limiting portions.

Here are some things I never knew about fitness:
1) Your body gets used to exercise, so you have to change up your routine from time to time.
2) Strength training is essential! (I NEVER did any weight/strength training in my life - I figured "why bother building muscles you will have to maintain?") According to a brochure from Weight Watchers, "Building muscle tissue burns extra calories (even at rest!), tones your body, and helps to conserve and even increase bone mass."

So what next? I just discovered: Jillian Michaels' book "Making the Cut." I borrowed a copy from the library and then realized it would be worth the money to buy the book...it includes meal plans, exercise plans as well as "how to" photos and descriptions, and some healthy, yummy recipes! I can't wait to get started, as soon as I finish the last few days of the Shred. I'll let you know how it works for me...

School Supply List

Yes, my older two children brought home their school supply lists for the fall, (already!) My immediate feeling was, "No! I'm not ready for 1st grade and 3rd grade!" My stomach started to churn and an anxious feeling overwhelmed me for a moment. My personality type LOVES lists and getting things organized, but a more tender (and rare) side felt so sad to know that my babies are doing something so normal (growing!) and I can't do a thing to stop it!!
Now that the initial panicky feeling has subsided, I do look forward to taking each of my children for some special one-on-one time to shop for school supplies (in August!) and I am so grateful that they are developing and growing healthily.
For the new moms out there, you probably get tired of hearing it, but these little ones grow so quickly! I admit, with my first child, I had no idea what was to come. Some phases seemed to last forever and I did not have the experience/perspective to know that it was just a season, and that it would end, and something new would begin. I'm sure I am spoiling my 2 1/2 year old, but I am just basking in his innocence...I LOVE to watch him play and explore. I am often brought to tears, not because I am tired of the mundane and longing for the next phase (as I sometimes did with my first), but because I know this will end so quickly!

Legacy

While listening to Pastor Matt preach a wonderful and challenging message* at church this morning, I was reminded of the song
"Legacy" by Nichole Nordeman:

"I don't mind if you've got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
And you can take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all the "who's who's" and so-and-so's
That used to be the best at such and such
It wouldn't matter much

I won't lie, it feels alright to see your name in lights
We all need an "atta boy" or "atta girl"
But in the end I'd like to hang my hat on more besides
The temporary trappings of this world

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

I don't have to look too far or too long awhile
To make a lengthy list of all that I enjoy
It's an accumulating trinket and a treasure pile
Where moth and rust, thieves and such will soon
enough destroy

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legac
y

Not well-traveled, not well-read
Not well-to-do, or well-bred
I just want to hear instead
Well done, good and faithful one

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things?
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy
"

Wonderful Weekend

Where do I begin??
Thursday was a picture-perfect day - the weather was sunny and warm, there was a Dream Ponies petting zoo at preschool and KBH and NJH got to ride ponies and pet goats, sheep and rabbits.

Later, I brought CAH, KBH and NJH to the park to meet up with friends for a picnic. While we were there, the kids had a ball, and they also got to see the tree guys take down an enormous old pine tree!

Friday, KBH did a tremendous job at gymnastics - almost kicking over into a back walkover, independent pullover on the bar, real cartwheels - and she's loving it! Later, all four kids enjoyed some time cooling down in the pool. The older three can jump in and swim anywhere in the pool now, and NJH is our most timid one. At age 2, the others would fearlessly jump (with vests on) and swim all over. NJH, however, won't step off the second stair! He will only jump to me if he is holding BOTH of my hands (and wearing the vest). When I do let go a little, he sinks right down, mouth open wide! Thankfully, he's not interested in jumping in on his own, and he is content splashing around on the top two stairs! This is actually the "easiest" life guarding season for me ever! I will enjoy it while it lasts. Friday night, we headed out to an AWANA leader appreciation dinner. The kids had a ball in their classrooms while hubby and I enjoyed a leisurely and delicious dinner, visiting with other adults. It was a lovely night!
Saturday, I took the girls to my sister Amy's baby shower. My other sister, Kara, hosted in her beautiful home, and she and our mom got an early start, getting things set up. I absolutely loved my hour-plus ride to her house: the girls and I sang along to an old Christmas cantata CD...it was truly an hour of worship and it was amazing!
"He made a way in a manger
A way to the cross
Messiah the promised
Before time had begun;
For God so loved this world
Though he knew what love would cost
He made a way in a manger
To make a way to the cross."

"Princes and paupers
Sons and daughters
Kneel at the throne of grace
Losers and winners
Saints and sinners
One day will see His face

And we'll all bow down
Kings will surrender their crowns
And worship Jesus
He is the Love of God

Summer and winter
The mountains and the rivers
Whisper the Savior's name
Awesome and Holy
A friend to the lonely
Forever His love will reign

And we'll all bow down
Kings will surrender their crowns
And worship Jesus
For He is the love, unfailing love
He is the Love of God"

The rest of the day flew by as we set up chairs and set out food, greeted guests, enjoyed the spread of family favorite foods, played some silly games, and oohed and aaahed over the most ADORABLE tiny pink outfits and baby paraphernalia!! After getting things back in place, we headed up to Amy's house to celebrate her hubby's birthday. I finally got to see Baby's nursery and it is GORGEOUS!! Words wouldn't do it justice - Amy has such the decorating gift! As we ate pizza at 8:30 at night, I realized: "Wow, I've relaxed! My kids are usually in bed by now, but here we are, eating dinner and we're all ok!" They finally got tucked into bed around 10pm (how unlike me!) and then hubby and I had the most lovely time talking and later laughing hysterically at two comedy sitcoms - "The Middle" and "Modern Family."
Today, we actually made to Sunday School (a little late) and the late service for church. Afterwards, we got some Country Drive-In take out and the kids swam for a bit. Before too long, it was time to head out to AWANA Awards night and I couldn't have been more proud of my kiddos! KBH memorized 36 verses in her Cubbies class this year, and she finished her book. CAH memorized 27 verses in her Sparks class this year, and she finished her book and started her extra credit book (which she hopes to finish this summer.) And NCH memorized 47 verses in his Sparks class this year, finished Book Two, and was named "Sparky of the Year"!!!

Like I said, what a wonderful weekend!

Blessings and Burdens

Life has been so wonderfully busy that I haven't had much time to update my blog. Many thoughts have been flying around my mind. I guess I'll just start listing them...
Blessings -
1) we've been healthy!!
2) kids are loving school, preschool, gymnastics, soccer, tball
3) the pool is open! the older 2 got in yesterday for a little swim (before hubby needed a dry pool deck for etching and painting)...soon we'll be swimming the days away!
4) my sister's baby shower is on Saturday and I'm SO excited! I never really bought baby items for my own children, so shopping for my niece (due in July) has been super fun!
5) I've been able to get out and run 5K three times a week and my time is (slightly) better...still trying to improve, but happy to just get out there!
6) I'm really enjoying my time with my children. I'm doing less "me stuff" outside the home than ever before (no MOPS, no worship team, no bible study, reduced CASHA) and I'm loving it!
7) I'm enjoying planning our meals and trying new recipes. Having kids who will try anything makes it even more fun!

Burdens -
[Ok, so these aren't really burdens, but I wanted a catchy "b-word" to fill in here!]
1) Potty training is getting old. NJH has been #2 trained since January, but has #1 accidents 10 times (or more) a day! He never initiates going, no matter what "plan" I try. Hubby got so tired of the puddles, he actually put pullups on NJH, and, sure enough, NJH has had #2 accidents for 3 days in a row! Grrr! I know "this too shall pass" but it's getting frustrating.
2) Bedtime pullups are getting old. CAH and KBH both still SOAK their pullups every night. I really want to stop buying pullups, and I would love to get the girls into twin beds (rather than toddler beds with crib mattresses/sheets). I feel like we've been trying forever to have them drink very little after dinner, get them up to go again before we go to bed, etc., but nothing has worked. The pediatrician said it's not "an issue" until age 7, so we wait...
3) For the most part, my children are good sleepers, but from time to time, NJH doesn't nap or cries at bedtime. This can be so frustrating!
4) I feel like my house never stays clean. I just get one area spic'n'span when another mess happens somewhere else!

Ok, that's enough whining. Now to put a positive spin back on my complaints,
1) NJH is our last baby and this is my last potty training time period.
2) Eventually, the girls WILL stay dry all night and they will be in their pretty big girl beds. At least they're not falling out of bed at night!
3) As I said, the kids USUALLY sleep well, and I am grateful for that!
4) Someday, the kids will be off to college and on their own, and my house can be as neat as I like. In the meantime, a perfectly clean house does not equal happiness!

1st Day of May was Made for Play!

Today was CAH's opening ceremony and first day of softball/t-ball. The weather couldn't have been better! KBH and I enjoyed watching the girls practice throwing, catching and hitting.

(CAH, aka "Cookie" waiting for her turn to bat)

(CAH at bat: swing batter!!)

Hubby and the boys met us at the field towards the end of the game. Afterwards, we "tailgated" with a picnic lunch made by hubby! Lunch was delicious and we all enjoyed the adventure. When lunch was over, I took the younger three home for naps while hubby and NCH stayed for NCH's soccer game. I savored the peace and quiet as I finished the grocery list while basking in the glorious sunshine. It got so warm that I actually wished we had opened the pool...I would have been in today!

When hubby and NCH returned, naptime was about over and we enjoyed some family yard time: NCH rehung the swings (hubby had repainted the swingset earlier in the day), hubby sanded and restained the deck rail, and the others spent the late afternoon swinging and playing. I had time to squeeze in a run - unfortunately, all I had to drink all day was a cup of coffee and a Diet Dr. Pepper! Midway through my run, I had to stop and walk for a bit...86 degrees + not much to drink = fatigue and dehydration! Yikes! Oh well, it felt good to be out for a bit nonetheless.

We tried a new recipe for dinner - a layered chicken salad which was pretty tasty, although a bit too heavy on the mayo/dressing. That reminds me, I took a picture of a dinner we all enjoyed a few nights ago - Shrimp Florentine Stir Fry (photo below):

After dinner, the kids enjoyed ice cream cones in the backyard while I cleaned up the kitchen. Then it was time for some serious scrub-in-the-tub-time for some seriously dirty kids!

Now's it's just after 9pm and all is quiet. I am eager to indulge in a little chocolate peanut butter ice cream treat and catch up on a little TV. Tomorrow will be another busy day - early church, another t-ball game for CAH, AWANA and grocery shopping!

Spring Break Fun

This was one of the most enjoyable school vacation weeks ever! We didn't go away on vacation, and we spent very little money. Instead, we had several play dates, with old friends and new friends. We relaxed and talked. We did our usual chores, but took our time. There were very few squabbles, but many laughs.
Sunday was Easter, which we spent at my parents' lake house. It was a gorgeous day and we all had a terrific time.

Monday, we met friends at the park and had a picnic lunch. NCH packed up his own sports equipment and asked how he could help get us ready to go. (He cleaned 2 bathrooms that morning!) NCH cuddled on the couch and watched a dinosaur documentary while the younger ones napped. NCH also went to a neighbor friend's house later in the day.
Tuesday, NCH and CAH worked together to straighten and vacuum their rooms. NCH also put laundry away for the family. He went to a friend's for the afternoon and had a wonderful time.
Wednesday, we met old friends at a park and had another picnic lunch. We weren't prepared for the extremely warm day - wow, it was hot out! It was so nice to visit with my old friend and see how her children have grown.
Thursday, some very old friends came to play. We ate at our table outdoors for the first time this year. The weather was amazing, and everyone enjoyed the time playing and visiting. (This was a friend I grew up playing with - what fun to see our children playing together now!)

Thursday night, I decided it was time: time to change over the clothes! So the kids helped me haul bags and boxes out of the attic...

You would have thought it was Christmas for the kids, though...they especially loved trying on their "new" jammies!

Friday, we went to the Saugerties area to visit my sister, her husband, and their Leonberger puppy, Takoda. Although the day started out rainy, the skies cleared and NCH was able to do some target shooting with Uncle Paul's pellet gun. (Not sure if that's actually what it's called.) He had a ball! They also chopped wood - a very manly day. I loved catching up with my sister and seeing how they've continued to make their new home lovely and charming.
Saturday was a slow, relaxing day...hubby worked on our pool fence (he had replaced the fence awhile back, all but 2 panels...but when NJH scaled that part of the fence the other day, we knew the replacement pieces needed to go in ASAP!) NCH was a cleaning machine before bed time, decluttering and straightening the family room, kitchen and bedrooms!
Today is Sunday...we went to Sunday School and the late church service. I finished changing over the kiddos' clothes and took the older three to AWANA, grocery shopped and then took the older three out for pizza.
Here I sit, reflecting on the week as I get the gear ready for back to school tomorrow...so thankful for the time with my sweet children. What a blessing!!

Poor Henry...No, Poor Liza!

I was in the van with the herd, listening to a kids CD, and the song, "There's a Hole in the Bucket, Dear Liza" came on. When it ended, the kids asked me to repeat it again and again...then they started making comments about it...

KBH: "Poor Henry, he doesn't know how to fix anything."
CAH: "No, it's Poor Liza. She's sick of all his questions - she has to tell him how to do everything!"
NCH: "Henry's kind of dumb. What's the matter with that guy?"

The funniest part is that song has been a long-time joke with my mom...when our hubbies (or other people) are acting a little dopey/helpless/clueless, we would call each other and hum that song. :)

There's a hole in the bucket,
Dear Liza, dear Liza
There's a hole in the bucket,
Dear Liza, there's a hole.

Then fix it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
Then fix it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, fix it.

With what shall I fix it,
Dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I fix it,
Dear Liza, with what?

With a straw, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
With a straw, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, with a straw.

But the straw is too long,
Dear Liza, dear Liza
But the straw is too long,
Dear Liza, too long

Then cut it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
Then cut it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, cut it.

With what shall I cut it,
Dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I cut it,
Dear Liza, with what?

With an axe, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
With an axe, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, an axe.

The axe is too dull,
Dear Liza, dear Liza
The axe is too dull,
Dear Liza, too dull

Then sharpen it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
Then sharpen it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, sharpen it.

With what shall I sharpen it,
Dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I sharpen it,
Dear Liza, with what?

With a stone, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
With a stone, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, a stone.

The stone is too dry,
Dear Liza, dear Liza
The stone is too dry,
Dear Liza, too dry

Then wet it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
Then wet it, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, wet it.

With what shall I wet it,
Dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I wet it,
Dear Liza, with what?

With water, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
With water, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, with water.

How shall I get it,
Dear Liza, dear Liza,
How shall I get it,
Dear Liza, how shall I?

In the bucket, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, dear Henry
In the bucket, dear Henry,
Dear Henry, in the bucket.

There's a hole in the bucket.
